Branding trades businesses in British Columbia

BC trades compete hard in a dense Lower Mainland and drive long distances in the Interior and North. A brand here has to be readable on a rain-streaked van in Burnaby and on a dusty pickup outside Kelowna.

British Columbia is home base for Trades.Studio, and it's one of the most varied markets in the country for trades branding. Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley are dense, expensive and crowded with competitors, so a recognisable fleet and crew can be the difference between being remembered and being one of ten names on a map. In the Interior and North, distances are long and vehicles become the main way people learn who works in town.

The market and who's buying

The province's largest communities include Vancouver, Surrey, Burnaby, Richmond, Abbotsford, Coquitlam, Kelowna and Saanich. Where customers live in townhouses and condos, trades often deal with strata councils and property managers as well as homeowners. That shifts the brand job: a professional quote package and a clean crew matter as much as the van, because a committee is choosing.

For renovation and exterior trades anywhere in the province, yard signs and job-site photos carry a lot of weight. In the North, the same handful of trucks is seen around town every day, and consistency builds trust quickly.

Heating is unusually mixed. In 2023, about 42% of BC households heated mainly with natural gas and 36% with electricity, according to Statistics Canada. For heating, plumbing and electrical trades, that means the services listed on a vehicle should match what local customers actually have.

Climate and what it does to a brand

The southwest coast has mild, wet winters; the Interior and North are much colder with longer heating seasons. On the coast, vans are rarely clean, so high-contrast layouts that survive road spray matter. Branded rain shells may see more wear than shirts for half the year. Inland, toques and insulated jackets are the visible uniform from autumn to spring, and should be branded as carefully as polos.

For video and photos, the wet season changes what's realistic to film outdoors. Plan exterior shoots for drier months and build an indoor shot list for the rest.

Regulators and credentials to know

We don't give compliance advice, but these are the bodies BC customers and suppliers refer to:

  • Technical Safety BC oversees electrical, gas, boilers and pressure vessels and other technical systems, and licenses gas and electrical contractors, even where some local governments issue permits.
  • SkilledTradesBC runs Skilled Trades Certification, now in effect for several electrical and mechanical trades such as gasfitters, refrigeration mechanics and construction electricians.
  • WorkSafeBC is the workers' compensation and workplace safety body; check with it and your safety lead before branding any high-visibility or protective apparel.
  • BC Registries and Online Services is where business names are registered. That is separate from trademark protection, which our naming guide explains.

Energy programs and your messaging

Many BC heating and electrical trades promote CleanBC programs. As of October 2026, the CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program applies new requirements to invoices dated on or after 6 July 2026, has removed some rebates and narrowed some eligibility levels. Confirm current details with the program before using them.

That instability is exactly why we keep program amounts off vehicles and long-run print. A phrase like "Ask us about current rebates" ages well; a dollar figure on vinyl does not. Put specifics on your website, where they can be updated the day a rule changes.

How we'd approach a BC trades brand

  1. Fleet first in the Lower Mainland. Parked vans on residential streets are your most-seen asset. See vehicle wrap design.
  2. Quote packages for strata and property managers, designed to be forwarded to a council.
  3. Outerwear branding for crews working through the wet season.
  4. Job-site video planned around the weather.

Our group's BC roots run deep: in our HVAC work, GasBoilers.ca was built as a gas-boiler division for CANRO Heat and now serves 26+ BC communities. Call, text or email to talk about your BC brand, or go back to all areas.

Frequently asked questions

Should a BC gas or electrical contractor show a licence number on the van?

Technical Safety BC licenses gas and electrical contractors, and many customers look for a licensed company. Check Technical Safety BC's guidance on how licence details should appear; we'll design space for them.

Can I advertise CleanBC rebates on my trucks?

We advise against printing amounts or eligibility on vehicles. The Energy Savings Program changed its requirements for invoices dated on or after 6 July 2026, and printed vinyl can't keep up. Promote program details on your website instead, and confirm with the administrator.

Do you work with BC trades outside Metro Vancouver?

Yes, throughout the province, including the Island, the Interior and the North. We're headquartered in Vancouver, and BC owners can meet us in person or by video call.
