Newfoundland and Labrador trades businesses work in some of the country's toughest weather and in communities where people know exactly whose truck is in whose driveway. The St. John's metro area is the largest market; elsewhere, trades often cover long distances with small fleets. A brand here needs to be bold enough to read through fog and spray, and consistent enough to become familiar.
The market and the business mix
St. John's and its neighbours Mount Pearl, Paradise and Conception Bay South form the biggest population centre, with Corner Brook, Gander, Grand Falls-Windsor and Happy Valley-Goose Bay as key regional hubs. The northeast Avalon, around St. John's, is where most competition is; on the west coast and in central Newfoundland, a handful of trades often serve whole regions.
Electric heating dominates. In 2023, about 64% of households in the province used electricity for their primary heating system and 13% used oil, according to Statistics Canada. For electrical, heat pump and insulation trades, that's a large audience whose questions centre on electricity costs.
Climate and branding
On the island, weather is cool, wet and windy, and the heating season is long; Labrador's subarctic winters are far colder. What that means for creative work:
- Wind and damp punish detail. Thin type and subtle colours vanish on a wet van. Bold shapes and high contrast survive.
- Outerwear works hard. Branded jackets and toques are visible most of the year. Put the name on the back.
- Filming windows are unpredictable. Keep shot lists ready and capture exterior work whenever weather allows.
- Rear doors on highway trucks need the number large enough to read from behind on long drives.
Regulators and credentials
For reference only:
- Engineering and Inspection Services at the Department of Government Services handles boiler, pressure vessel and compressed gas permits and inspections, electrical permits and inspections, and electrical contractor registration. Pressure systems need a permit before installation or alteration and an inspection once the work is done.
- The Apprenticeship and Trades Certification Division manages trade certification.
- WorkplaceNL covers workplace safety and compensation; check apparel safety questions with it.
- Companies and Deeds Online is the registry of companies. Registering a name there is different from a trademark; see the naming guide.
Programs and messaging
As of October 2026, the takeCHARGE Oil to Electric Incentive Program, run by Newfoundland Power and NL Hydro with government support, is open and processed based on budget availability, with no end date listed. On 16 October 2026, the federal government announced funding to deliver the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program in the province through takeCHARGE; launch details weren't confirmed as of that date. Check with takeCHARGE before quoting any program.
With a new program arriving and an existing one tied to budget, this is a moment to keep vehicle copy general and accurate. Use the website to explain what's currently available.
Long distances and small fleets
Outside the northeast Avalon, many trades cover whole regions with two or three trucks. In that situation the rear doors and tailgate become the most-read part of the vehicle, because the people who see your truck most are the ones driving behind it on the highway. Put the name, trade and number there in the largest size the doors allow.
A worked example: if one truck covers a wide rural area and its fleet-only phone number brings in four calls a month, with two becoming jobs worth $600 each, that's about $14,400 a year from one vehicle. Plug in your own figures; the point is to measure, not to guess.
Print travels with you, too. Leave a magnet or equipment sticker on every call, so a customer two hours away still has your number when they need you again.
How we'd approach a Newfoundland and Labrador trades brand
- Bold, simple vehicle graphics designed for weather. See vehicle wrap design.
- Year-round outerwear branding through our uniforms service.
- Equipment stickers and magnets on every heating and electrical call.
- A short library of job video, captured opportunistically, to show care and tidiness on real jobs.
Call, text or email with photos of your trucks and crew. Or return to all areas.
Frequently asked questions
Do electrical contractors register in Newfoundland and Labrador?
Yes. Electrical contractors register with the province, and electrical work needs permits and inspections. Ask Engineering and Inspection Services how registration details should appear in your advertising.
Can I put takeCHARGE incentives on my vans?
Keep amounts off the vehicle. The Oil to Electric Incentive is processed based on budget availability, and new federal funding was only announced in October 2026. Put current details on your website and confirm with takeCHARGE.
Do you work with companies in Labrador?
Yes. Our process doesn't depend on distance, so Happy Valley-Goose Bay gets the same design work as St. John's. We brief local suppliers wherever you are.
