Prince Edward Island is the smallest market we cover, and in some ways the most demanding for a brand. With a small population spread across the island, a trades company's trucks, shirts and signs are seen by the same people repeatedly. Done well, that builds recognition quickly. Done carelessly, it makes a business look inconsistent to everyone at once.
The market and the business mix
The island's largest communities include Charlottetown, Summerside, Stratford, Three Rivers and Cornwall. Charlottetown and Stratford form the busiest area; elsewhere, trades often cover large rural stretches with one or two vehicles.
Heat pumps lead home heating on PEI more than anywhere else in our data: in 2023, they were the primary system for about 36% of households, while 28% used oil, 18% electricity and 8% wood, according to Statistics Canada. For heating, electrical and plumbing trades, heat pump service is a core part of the message.
Climate and branding
The surrounding gulf softens the island's winters a little, but they are still cold and snowy. In branding terms: damp and salty vehicle panels much of the year, outerwear as the visible uniform in winter, and a warmer season when exterior work is easiest to photograph. Plan your job-site video and photos for those months.
Regulators and licences
For reference only:
- Inspection Services is the provincial office for electrical, plumbing, propane, elevators and lifts, and pressure equipment. Plumbing companies need a Plumbing Contractor's Licence; boiler and pressure vessel work requires a Mechanical Contractor Licence, whose current three-year cycle ends on 31 December 2027; individuals servicing propane appliances need an LP Gas Personnel Licence.
- PEI Apprenticeship handles trade certification.
- WCB PEI covers workers' compensation; check apparel safety questions with it and your safety lead.
Licence cycles are a design detail people forget. If a licence number appears on a vehicle or long-run print, keep a note of when it renews, so your materials stay correct.
Business names are registered through the PEI corporate and business registry, which is separate from trademark protection. See our naming guide.
Programs and messaging
PEI shows exactly why rebate figures don't belong on vinyl. As of October 2026, efficiencyPEI's residential heat pump equipment rebates ended on 15 April 2026, although purchases made in the year before may still apply within one year of purchase. The efficiencyPEI page says the free heat pump program is closed. Meanwhile, the province's Free Insulation Program is being expanded under a federal affordability agreement announced in June 2026. Confirm all details with efficiencyPEI.
A truck that said "Free heat pumps" in 2025 is advertising something that no longer exists. Keep the vehicle general and the website current.
Small fleets, careful choices
Many island trades run one to three vehicles, so every design choice carries more weight. A few principles hold up well:
- One layout, applied over time. You don't need to wrap every truck at once. Apply the same design to each vehicle as it comes due, and the fleet becomes consistent within a couple of years.
- Short copy. The island is small, so place names add less. Name, trade, number and web address are usually enough.
- Licence details planned in. If you choose to show licence numbers, give them a fixed spot and note the renewal date.
- Durable print over volume. A few hundred magnets and equipment stickers placed on real jobs usually do more than thousands of flyers.
Worked example: if a heating company places magnets and stickers on 300 service calls a year, and five of those households call back for a $400 repair they might otherwise have given a competitor, that's $2,000 in revenue from a small print order. Use your own numbers.
How we'd approach a PEI trades brand
- Clean up what exists. In a small market, recognition you already have is valuable. See brand identity.
- One consistent vehicle design you can apply to each truck as it comes due. See vehicle wrap design.
- Equipment stickers on every heat pump call, so the island's many heat pump owners have your number on the unit.
- Summer photo and video to build a year's worth of proof.
Call, text or email with photos of your vehicles and signs. Or return to all areas.
Frequently asked questions
Which PEI licences might belong on my vehicle?
PEI has a Plumbing Contractor's Licence, a Mechanical Contractor Licence for boiler and pressure vessel work, an Elevator and Lifts Contractor's Licence, and LP Gas Personnel Licences. Ask Inspection Services how licence details should be shown in advertising.
Is a full fleet rebrand realistic for a small PEI company?
Usually a phased one is. Start with digital profiles and your most-seen vehicle, then shirts and signs as they come due. The rollout guide shows the order.
Can I still promote efficiencyPEI heat pump rebates?
As of October 2026, the residential heat pump equipment rebates ended on 15 April 2026 and the free heat pump program page says applications are closed. Check with efficiencyPEI before mentioning any program.
